Free sql gui tool
Price is right, and judging by the screenshots, pretty similar to Navicat - the downside is windows only.

Yeh, could be they bought them out, or stole their code? I didn't investigate any further other than a quick skim.

It is the old MySQL Front.

IIRC, the original author and his (partners or whatever?) had a parting of
the ways.

They took the code, forked it and moved in one direction.

Later on he re-released the original again here.

HeidiSQL is, as you say, the original author Ansgar Becker re-releasing what he first called MySQL Front.

He had stopped development a few years back, allowed a new developer to use the name. But it wasn't at all the same product, entirely different codebase (and quite buggy). When he decided to resume development of his product, he called it HeidiSQL.

Meanwhile, the second developer continued the entirely different MySQL Front, but evidently has had to change the name to just SQL Front.

HeidiSQL is a great product, I use it almost daily. However it doesn't have a lot of the more advanced functionality like managing foreign key constraints, for example. I keep Navicat around for those types of tasks.

Re: Free sql gui tool
Hi Joseph -

what would you say is the main difference(s) between Navicat and Heidi?
I use Navicat daily... but people ask me about mySQL interfaces all the time and I'd like to have a free option to recommend along with navicat.
